    Description

"A Mandarin or Magistrate of Turon attended by his Pipe-Bearer."
This rare, original engraving by William Alexander is from George Staunton's "An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China," published by George Nicol in 1796. This is the original, not a modern digital copy.
It is about 16" (42 cm) x 22 1/2" (58 cm) overall with the image being about 11" (29 cm) x 8 1/2" (21 cm).   Foxing and a few small tears around the edges as shown in photos. Displays very well.

"A striking series of prints from an important eighteenth century series on China. William Alexander was an English watercolorist born in 1767. He accompanied Lord Macartney to China and made drawings of the scenery and life in China, which were issued in this important publication. In 1802 Alexander was made Professor of Drawing at the Royal Military College at Great Marlow, and a few years later assistant keeper of antiquities at the British Museum, which resulted in his becoming the first curator of prints and drawings. Alexander also contributed numerous drawings to Descriptions of Ancient Marbles and Terracottas in the British Museum and Architectural Antiquities. He died in 1816. These prints are admirable for their accuracy in depicting the architecture, costume, culture and landscape of Imperial China."
