I have thousands of these units in use over the past 20 years. Each is constructed of high quality structural nylon rod with a hand selected antler in one end and a 20D solid copper nail in the other end. The only commercially available antler Ishi Stick. This is the toughest material on the planet with the same bending characteristics as Delrin but infinitely stronger and impervious to splitting. It's also much more expensive than Delrin. Please don't confuse it with cheap plastic rod.
Each end is easily refillable with 2 setscrews in each end.
