Product Description
Guéré mask from Ivory Coast. Original piece over 40 years old. Piece on plinth.
The Guéré refers to an ethnic group from Côte d'Ivoire, living in the western region of the country, near Liberia. He is installed in the departments of Bangolo, Duékoué, Guiglo and Toulepleu and has lived in Eburnie for more than seven centuries. If this people live today mainly between the Cavally river (Liberian border), the Sassandra river (to the east) and to the south of the 18 mountain regions, in the past it was installed further north, in the current country Dan, but was gradually forced to take refuge in the forest that characterizes his region, mainly because of the Mandingo invasions of the seventeenth century.
The Wobe and the Guéré are in reality a single people, the We people, artificially divided by the French colonial administration.
